Words That
Outlive the Moment.

Elegies, spoken word, and verse — some written last month, some passed down across a hundred years. We archive both, side by side, because grief does not check the date.

Milad
In the Darkened Lands of Arabia
In the darkened lands of Arabia, where infant daughters were buried alive, where the weak were traded, bought, and sold — and mercy bowed before the might of gold.
Muharram
Ashura
They ask me, "Why do you cry every year? Why do your eyes still shed these tears?" And I answer — before you ask me why I mourn, tell me first why others rejoice on the day Husain was torn.
Everyday
The Prerequisite
They ask me, "Why does Ali crown your tongue? Why do your verses praise his name?" I smiled and said, "Before we judge, let's start where Revelation starts."
Muharram
Forgive me, Water
Forgive me, Water. Forgive me today. I know my lips are thirsty, yet I must walk away. How can I drink from your flow, while Husain remains thirsty back where the tents glow?
Muharram
Mother, This Is Asghar
I imagine the Day when the heavens unfold — the Day when every secret is finally told. For Husain is coming, and all of creation knows.
Muharram
A Father's Cry
They tell me Ali Akbar rode bravely that day. But every Muharram, my heart drifts another way. I do not stop at the battlefield dust — I stop at the moment a father said, "Go, if you must."
Everyday
Rafidhi
They ask me why I love Ali, why his name lives inside of me. I tell them this is not just a claim — this love is fire, this love is flame.
Everyday
A Faithful Wife
Four wives stand before history, four lives through which one truth is known — faith is never gained through marriage, nor by husbands' rank alone.
Arbaeen
The Road Remembers
Come… walk with me. Leave behind the noise of the world, your titles, wealth, and hurried life. For on this road, the hearts depart from worldly burdens, pain, and strife.
About the Library

Poetry as a form of khidmah.

The VR Poetry Library is not a collection of pleasant verses. It is an act of preservation.

We believe that grief that has found its words becomes grief that can be shared. When a poet writes about Karbala, they are not simply describing an event — they are extending its reach across time, ensuring that someone, somewhere, in another generation, encounters the tragedy and is changed by it.

Every poem in this library was chosen or commissioned because it carries something true. We publish both new work and classical verse, in English and Somali, because the legacy of the Ahlulbayt belongs to every language it has ever moved.

Original Compositions
New poetry written specifically for VR — elegies, spoken word, and verse commissioned from community voices.
Classical Preservation
Traditional Arabic and Somali poetry translated and archived — carrying forward what previous generations entrusted to the next.
Two Languages
All poetry is available in English and Somali — because faith is spoken in the language you dream in.
Free to Read & Share
Every poem in this library is free — to read, to share, to recite in a majlis, and to pass on to the next generation.
Submit Your Poetry

Do your words
carry Karbala?

We welcome submissions from poets, writers, and community voices. If you have written an elegy, a spoken-word piece, or a poem rooted in the teachings of the Ahlulbayt, we would love to consider it for the library.

Rooted in the Ahlulbayt Tradition
Poetry must be inspired by and respectful of the teachings and legacy of the Ahlulbayt (peace be upon them).
Original Work
We accept original compositions only. Please confirm that the work is your own and not previously published without your rights.
English or Somali
We currently publish in English and Somali. Submissions in both languages are warmly welcomed.
Reviewed with Adab
All submissions are reviewed with care and respect. We aim to respond to every submission, Insha'Allah.
